11/30/09

MONTGOMERY, AL. (November 30 2009) - When track owners Bobby and Mark
Knox bought Montgomery Motor Speedway in 2009, they did not envision that
growth and popularity would come so rapidly. After all the historic racing
facility had been closed for over two years. They were aware that much had
to be accomplished quickly to get the ½-mile speed plant operational for
2009, but they did not envision they would have to fight so hard to be able
to operate the business. They knew race teams were hungry for a place to
race and race fans were ready to see good door handle to door handle
competition, but court battles were on the horizon for a facility that had
operated since 1955.
While 2009 was considered a growing year to have a viable racing
establishment in the Montgomery area, the Knox's were ecstatic over support
shown by race teams and fans. The track averaged 1,500 fans throughout 2009.
Besides Pro Late Models, other local divisions were Pure Stocks, Trucks,
Open Wheel Modified, Mini-Stock, and Sportsman. That support encouraged the
brothers to make 2010 better.
To kick off the 2010 season, Bobby and Mark Knox have announced the
opening race meet for 2010 will be March 20 with the feature event a 125-Lap
Pro Late Model race. This will be the first of six "Show Me The Money"
races, an increase of two events over 2009, and will pay the winner $5,000.
The rest of the 2010 schedule will be released before the end of the year.
The "Show Me The Money" races were highly successful in 2009 as 42 different
drivers representing five states competed in four events. Four different
winners were crowned: Jason Young, Houston, Tx.; Hunter Robbins, Montgomery,
Al.; John Bolen, Jasper, Al.; and Augie Grill, Hayden, Al. Grill was named
overall point champion in the four races do to his consistency of three
second place finishes and one win to garner his team an additional $5,000.
One of the first changes the Knox's made at the track was to build
cement grandstands, including hand rails, giving race fans better and safer
seating conditions. The second major change was to resurface the asphalt
speed plant which had not been done over 19 years and four former owners.
Other major improvements over the winter will see all inside and outside
retaining walls receiving new paint as will the scoreboard. The sound
system will be revamped and advertising boards will adorn turns three and
four. A major change in 2010 will be all race haulers will be taken out of
the track during feature races so race fans can view the whole track during
major events.
"We want our competitors, race fans and the city of Montgomery to know
they have the best and safest short-track racing facility in the state of
Alabama", stated Bobby Knox. "We want race teams and fans to feel this is
THEIR track and to have as much pride in this facility as they do their own
property. We want this to be their entertainment facility and we welcome
any suggestions from our racers and fans to make it even better. Heck they
might even see some flowers and shrubs planted at the track entrance and
front gate," quipped Knox.
